No end to legal woes for Shah Rukh Khan's Raees, don Abdul Latif's son threatens Rs 100 crore lawsuit

Shah Rukh Khan and the makers of Raees have clarified that the film is not inspired by yesteryear don Abdul Latif, but his son is unmoved.

Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Raees is in fresh trouble as it might face legal hurdles once it hits the theatres. SRK plays an underworld don who engages in bootlegging. It is alleged that the film is based on the life of Gujarat gangster Abdul Latif. Now, the late don’s son Mushtaq Sheikh has reportedly decided to file a fresh case if the film releases on 25 January. Shaikh alleges that the film has portrayed his father in a wrong light.

In April this year, he had filed a defamation suit to the tune of Rs 100 crore before the Gujarat High Court, alleging that Shah Rukh Khan’s character was based on his father’s life. Sheikh said that the protagonist has been portrayed as someone who runs a brothel and uses women to smuggle liquor, according to media reports.

Abdul Latif was a bootlegger who ran a flourishing business in Popatiyawad area of Gujarat in 1980’s. Slowly, he rose to become a don. It is also believed that he had a hand in contract killings as well as hawala.

It should be mentioned that Khan along with the makers of the film has categorically denied that Raees is based on Latif’s life, and reiterated that Rahul Dholakia’s directorial venture is purely a work of fiction.

“In view of certain media reports that claim that the film ‘Raees’ is based on a real-life story and rumours to that effect being circulated, we take this opportunity to clarify that the Story of the film is a pure work of fiction, Not based on any person; living or dead,” the makers said in a statement.
