Meet Harshdeep Kaur, the melodious Sufi ki Sultana who has set hearts racing with 'Zaalima' in Raees

Harshdeep Kaur, who has sung chartbuster song Zaalima in Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Raees, speaks to InUth about SRK factor and Sufi music

All of you must have heard the famous Zaalima song from the film Raees, which will hit the theatres on 25 January. Those of you who like Shah Rukh Khan must have been playing it on a loop as well. The melodious track has become extremely popular since it was unveiled. While Arijit Singh has lent his voice for SRK, can you guess the same for Mahira Khan? Take a look at the above picture which will act as a hint.

Yes, you guessed it right. She is none other than Harshdeep Kaur. In an illustrious career so far, she has sung popular songs like Ik Onkar (Rang De Basanti), Baari Barsi (Band Baaja Baraat), Katiya Karun (Rockstar), Heer (Jab Tak Hai Jaan), Kabira (Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani) to name a few. Known for her prowess in Sufi music, Kaur has carved a distinct place for herself among music lovers.

Harshdeep’s songs have a flavour of Sufism in it. Having won the title of Sufi Ki Sultana nine years ago, she said her efforts have been directed at popularising this genre of music among youths. When asked whether she deserved credit for it, Harshdeep told InUth over phone from Mumbai:

Sufi music has always been there in Bollywood and I have tried to put in a modern style and make the youth connect. With Sufi music. I wanted to project that the modern generation is not limited to pop music and rock music. They are also into serious music as well. I have tried to do that, I will take credit of popularising it.

After she won accolades with her song Heer from Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Zaalima happens to be the second song by her which features King Khan. Responding to a query on the luck factor associated with SRK, she remarked:

Shah Rukh Khan is lucky for me. I am a big SRK fan. As soon as I heard that I would be singing for him in Raees, I was happier. I saw the trailer and was looking forward to watching the film as a fan. But now watching the film with my song is a big high.

It is indeed a great feeling to see her efforts being appreciated by masses. What has turned out to be an icing on the cake is the chemistry between Shah Rukh and Mahira in the film. Harshdeep also revealed how she has been flooded with congratulatory messages on social media both from her fans and peers as well. “Well, it is always good to be appreciated for your hard work. People are really loving the song,” she said.
