Amazon Prime's 'Made In Heaven' Marries Barjatya Shaadis With Mira Nair's Monsoon Wedding

Created by Zoya Akhtar & Reema Kagti, Made In Heaven is the third original series by Excel Entertainment after Inside Edge & Mirzapur.

Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti are running their first limited series – Made In Heaven. Following the journey of a couple of wedding planners (Arjun Mathur & Sobhita Dhulipala), the show is obviously reminiscent of YRF’s Band Baaja Baraat. However, this isn’t merely a love story. Apart from the two wedding planners, there are a bunch of colourful characters, including the likes of Kalki Koechlin, Jim Sarbh, Shashank Arora and Shivani Raghuvanshi. More people around an Indian wedding means more chaos.

The ultra-rich family celebrations are reminiscent of Sooraj Barjatya’s films from Hum Aapke Hai Koun, Vivaah to something as recent as Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. Weddings were nearly a character in each of these films. After Gully Boy and this series, Zoya Akhtar has now paid touched upon two of Mira Nair’s most-loved films – Salaam Bombay and Monsoon Wedding. Few films have been able to capture the madness of an extended Indian family getting together like Mira Nair’s 2001 film.

Akhtar and Kagti realise what they’re making fun of, which is visible in the way two women complain about not having enough gold in the wedding. Lest the relatives think, the families aren’t spending enough. Also starring Pulkit Samrat in a significant role, the show promises to be a wild ride about some crazy rich Indians and their weddings!

Apart from Zoya Akhtar, the show is bringing on the likes of Prashant Nair (Delhi In A Day), Alankrita Shrivastava (Lipstick Under My Burkha) and Nitya Mehra (Baar Baar Dekho) to direct two episodes each. This is Excel Entertainment’s third original series with Amazon Prime after Inside Edge and Mirzapur. Here’s the trailer:

Made In Heaven will begin streaming from March 8, 2019.
