Inside Edge Episode 1 review: Vivek Oberoi, Richa Chadha set the tone for an intriguing tale beyond T20 glamour

Inside Edge, the much-awaited web series revolving around a T20 cricket team is out. Here's our review of the Amazon Prime venture featuring Vivek Oberoi, Richa Chadha and Sayani Gupta

Inside Edge, the much-awaited web series giving a sneak peek into the world beyond the glamour of T20 cricket is finally out. Boasting of an ensemble cast comprising Vivek Oberoi, Richa Chadha, Sayani Gupta, Angad Bedi and Tanuj Virwani, Amazon Prime’s latest offering is intriguing to the core. With the popularity of the annual cricket extravaganza, the Indian Premier League (IPL), the gentleman’s game is no longer a contest between the bat and a ball on a 22-yard strip. Inside Edge is a fictional account of what transpires within a premier T20 team that the hawk-eye cameras fail to capture through their lenses.

Mumbai Mavericks is a top-ranked cricket team that is riddled with financial woes despite having won two titles. Led by former Test captain Arvind Vashisht (Angad Bedi), the squad boasts of a star batsman Vayu Raghavan (Tanuj Virwani) who is a Casanova. Despite his arrogant persona mostly accompanied with cuss words at disposal, Raghavan is a pinch-hitter and wins matches for his team. The team is co-owned by Zarina Malik (Richa Chadha), who is trying hard to save the team from doldrums while staring at an acting career going downhill. When all her attempts to revive the Mavericks seem to end in a failure, Zarina seeks help from businessman Vikrant Dhawan (Vivek Oberoi). The suave tycoon with a larger-than-life image steps in to save the team. But he has some other plans. Meanwhile, a promising fast bowler from a small town in UP makes it to the team as a last-minute replacement.

What’s hot

After portraying strong characters in films like Gangs of Wasseypur, Fukres, Sarbjit and others, Richa Chadha is the one to watch out for. In the first episode we get a glimpse of how determined she is to pull out Mavericks from the losses and make it a profit-making team. “The Mavericks is my team and I will do everything in my power to protect it,” she is seen confronting Vikrant Dhawan.

However, it is Vivek Oberoi who excels as a shrewd businessman Vikrant Dhawan. His role reminds us of the characters like Pratap Ravi from Rakhtha Charitra and Chandu in Company, both helmed by Ram Gopal Varma. His punchlines are bang on and it is evident that the actor has worked hard on getting into the skin of the character. The manner in which he holds a glass of whiskey in his hand while uttering the dialogue,”Success is all about timing,” speaks volumes about his character in the series.

Besides the duo, the series has Angad Bedi, who plays a cricket captain Arvind Vashisth. Having shot to prominence with the role of an antagonist in Taapsee Pannu starrer Pink, he is likely to emerge as a dark horse in upcoming episodes.

What’s not

The episode would have been better if other cast members like Sayani Gupta and Sanjay Suri got more screen time. The former recently won praises with her role in Akshay Kumar starrer Jolly LLB 2. Here she plays the role of Mavericks’ team analyst and Vayu (Tanuj Virwani)’s sister. She barely gets two-minute screen time. On the other hand, Sanjay Suri is more than a chain-smoker. We hope that the actor has more to play in Inside Edge.

How to watch

Inside Edge can be watched on Amazon Prime mobile app. You can also stream it on your desktop/laptops. Meanewhile, have a look at the trailer.
