This year featured some of the greatest superhero films like Deadpool, Suicide Squad, Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, Doctor Strange, Captain America: Civil War. Yet, this is only the beginning. 2016 set the stage for much bigger films in 2017. Batman vs Superman introduced Wonder Woman, who will get an independent origins film releasing next year and the film will be followed by Justice League.
Marvel is all geared up with four movies of its own. This year too, Marvel outshone DC, where the only redeeming factor was Wonder Woman. The much-awaited Suicide Squad also turned out to be a disappointing mess with Cara Delevingne barely acting as the Enchantress. The upcoming DC movies seem more upbeat than Zack Snyder’s regular sullen films. With Snyder taking a break and handing over the reigns of Wonder Woman to Patty Jenkins, the future of DC looks quite promising. Anyway, here is the full list of all the superhero films releasing next year.
Hugh Jackman will appear as Wolverine for the last time in this Marvel film. A worn-down Logan takes upon one last adventure in a post-apocalyptic future, symbolic of Jackman’s last appearance as the character. Most, if not all, of the X-Men are dead in this timeline and Logan has been tasked with protecting a child mutant, speculated to be X-23.
Directed by Zack Snyder, the film will involve the Bruce Wayne/Batman gathering a team of humans with special abilities. The film will feature Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and the Flash. The cast for Justice League includes Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, and Jason Momoa and is expected to be quite a thrilling watch.
Guardians of the Galaxy 2
A sequel to the 2014 film Guardians of the Galaxy, this James Gunn film is Marvel’s best bet next year. Starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper and Dave Bautista, the film is releasing on July 28, 2017.
Perhaps the most promising DC film of them all, Wonder Woman is an origins story of the Amazonian warrior Princess Diana, portrayed by Gal Gadot. The film will feature the struggles of one of the most iconic female superheroes as she steps into the real world, unaware of its dangers, to selflessly participate in ending the First World War. The film stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Connie Nielsen, Robin Wright, Lucy Davis, and Lisa Loven Kongsli.
Thor: Ragnarok will be third in queue in the Thor film series. Starring Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba, Anthony Hopkins, Cate Blanchett, and Tessa Thompson. Mark Ruffalo and Benedict Cumberbatch will also reprise their roles of Hulk and Doctor Strange from the MCU in the film. It is set to be released on November 3.
Picking up after the events of Captain America: Civil War, Spider-man: Homecoming will outline the tale of a 15-year-old Peter Parker. Tony Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr., takes this young superhero under his wing as the latter tries to balance school and being a superhero. The cast of the film includes Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Zendaya, Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, and Laura Harrier.
Based on the hit TV series franchise of the same name, Power Rangers is a reboot featuring the characters from the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. The film stars, Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Banks, Dacre Montgomery, RJ Cyler, Ludi Lin, Naomi Scott, Becky G, and Bill Hader.
