Donald Trump's angry reaction to Meryl Streep's Golden Globes speech shows why she was so right

President elect Donald Trump has rebuked Meryl Streep after she took a dig at him in her speech at Golden Globes Awards last night

US President-elect Donald Trump called Meryl Streep an overrated actress of Hollywood after the latter slammed him for his controversial stand on many matters. Meryl was speaking at the 74th Golden Globes awards after she was felicitated with the Cecil B. DeMille Award. Without even naming Trump, Meryl denounced him as a bully who disrespected and humiliated people. It was not long before Meryl’s  speech garnered applauds that Donald Trump rebuked her by taking to the micro-blogging website Twitter.

In her acceptance speech, Meryl highlighted that for her the best performance came when a person at high position mocked a disabled journalist. Meryl then went on to add that incidents like these set the wrong examples. Meryl said:

This instinct to humiliate, when it’s modeled by someone in the public platform, by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody’s life, because it kind of gives permission for other people to do the same thing.

In his tweets, Donald called Meryl a ‘Hillary Flunky’ who lost big in the elections. The reference was of course to Donald’s competitor at the Presidential elections Hillary Clinton, who was staunchly endorsed by Meryl. He said he never intended to mock anyone and it was ‘dishonest media’ that wanted to make him look bad. Here are his tweets:

While Donald Trump looks clearly displeased with the way Meryl Streep took a dig at him, a larger part of the world disagreed with him, Meryl Streep was one of the top trending topics on social media today with almost everyone showering love on her for standing up.

Incidentally, Trump himself had once praised Streep for her acting prowess. Back in 2015, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, when he was asked about the actresses he loves to watch, he named both Streep and Julia Roberts (also a Hillary supporter). “Meryl Streep is excellent,” he had said in her praise, “She’s a fine person, too.” And now that Streep has taken a jab at him, he has chosen to change his opinion of the talented actress whom he now deems “over-rated”. Good going, Trump.
