From Aashiqui 2 to Half Girlfriend: Here's why birthday boy Mohit Suri is the king of tragic romance

Mohit Suri, known for his films like Aashiqui 2, Ek Villain and upcoming Half Girlfriend, turns 36. We wish him a very Happy Birthday

Mohit Suri, known for portraying the complexities of romantic relationships in his films, turns 36 today.  In a brief film career spanning more than 11 years, he has helmed films which were more than a boy-loves-girl story. Be it a romantic thriller like Ek Villain, sad love story like Hamari Adhuri Kahani or the upcoming Half Girlfriend, he never fails to excite you with his work.

On his birthday, here we bring to you six films which show how versatile filmmaker he is when it comes to love stories.

Aashiqui 2: If Rahul Roy-starrer Aashiqui became an instant hit, Aashiqui 2 was even a bigger success. Released in 2013, the Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor starrer became a runaway success, attributed to the soulful album which is still played by music fans. And Mohit Suri deserves applause for turning a simple story into a musical romance. While critics berated the film by calling it a rip-off of Amitabh Bachchan-starrer Abhimaan, Suri’s cinematic treatment made this film a Rs 100 crore club entrant.

Woh Lamhe: No other filmmaker has narrated his own story than Mahesh Bhatt. Loosely based on yesteryear actor Parveen Babi’s life, the film directed by Mohit Suri featured Shiney Ahuja and Kangana Ranaut in lead roles. The drama earned immense accolades for the screenplay, direction and performances by both Kangana and Shiney.

Ek Villain: What happens when a dreaded gangster falls in love with a cancer patient who wants to enjoy every moment of her life? Mohit Suri won hearts with his 2014 release Ek Villain which was loved by the viewers. Not to forget the negative role played by Riteish Deshmukh who killed women without any signs of regret. And last but not the least, Suri should be credited to have made Kamaal R Khan ‘act’.

Awarapan: After a series of duds, it was believed that Emraan Hashmi’s career was all but finished. His serial kisser image had failed to pull crowd into theatres. But all that changed after he collaborated with his cousin Mohit Suri. Brandishing a shotgun in the 2007 thriller Awarapan, Emraan witnessed a turnaround in his fortunes and has not looked back since then. Suri’s art of unconventional storytelling along with a soulful music album made this film a favourite among the fans.

Murder 2: If Mohit Suri could make love stories, he proved his versatility with a thriller like Murder 2. The second instalment of Vishesh Films’s Murder franchise, the Emraan Hashmi-Jacqueline Fernandez starrer became a runaway hit, thanks to an intriguing storyline and superb music. The antagonist played by Prashant Narayanan instilled fear among all with his glances.

Hamari Adhuri Kahani: A suave entrepreneur falls in love with a married woman, whose husband has mysteriously disappeared. Starring Vidya Balan, Emraan Hashmi and Rajkummar Rao, the Mohit Suri directorial was based on the love story of Mahesh Bhatt’s parents. The film did lose plot due to over-the-top dialogues, but it is worthy of watching for the director’s fans.

Have a nice day, Mr Suri.
