Tagore's Kabuliwala Gets A Makeover in Danny Denzongpa's 'Bioscopewala'

The sepia-toned teaser is as cute as it gets

Those who have grown up reading Rabindranath Tagore’s heartbreakingly beautiful Kabuliwala are in for a treat. The teaser of Deb Medhekar’s Bioscopewala, which is an adaptation of Tagore’s story, is out and it looks like we’re going to be happy-crying into tissues pretty soon. Starring Danny Denzongpa as ‘Bioscope wala’, Geetanjali Thapa, Tisca Chopra, Adil Hussain, and Sunil Doshi, the film is set to release on May 25.

For the uninitiated, Kabuliwala (1892) is the story of a dry fruit seller from Afghanistan who befriends a young girl, Mini, and exchanges stories with her. After a prolonged absence when he makes a reappearance in the neighbourhood, he comes back to meet his young friend, and realises she’s not little anymore. Like all of Tagore’s stories, this one too is simple, but a powerful commentary on human relationships.

In this teaser, the dry fruits have been replaced by a bioscope – a travelling cinema if you will. The sepia-toned teaser gives us just enough glimpse into the world created by Deb Medhekar to be intrigued. Of course, the presence of the almost reclusive Danny Denzongpa makes everything seem so much better.

Kabuliwala has previously been adapted in Bengali and Hindi on the big screen as well as a TV series.
