It’s a sad beginning to the day, as we have not only lost a remarkable actor but also a great human being. Veteran actor Om Puri passed away on Friday morning of a heart attack at his residence. The whole nation is mourning the sudden demise of the actor and people from the film industry took to social media to pay homage to the legendary actor.

Honoured with Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, Om Puri was a critically acclaimed actor and was not only an active part of Hindi films but Pakistani and Hollywood movies as well. His unconventional roles and stellar performances are what made him the best.

Dharavi

Directed by Sudhir Mishra, the film was set in the backdrop of India’s largest slum Dharavi and starred Shabana Azmi and Om Puri in lead roles. The film won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film and was also invited at a screening at the London Film Festival, Mannheim International Film Festival, and Festival 3 Continents Nantes.

Ardha Satya

Om Puri played the role of a policeman in the film and the film is still considered to be one of the best cop films made in India and went on to win many awards.

City of Joy

A French-British drama based on a novel of the same name it had Om Puri in the role of a rural farmer. Though the movie was not a box-office hit, but Om Puri’s acting won many hearts.

Mirch Masala

Though the actor was not playing the lead role in the film, but his character of an old Muslim gatekeeper and factory guard was liked by the people and had an important part in taking the film forward.

Aakrosh

Rumoured to be based on a true incident, the film was a satire on the corruption in the judicial system and went to win National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi.

Maqbool

The film is based on William Shakespeare’s Macbeth and with Mumbai underworld as its backdrop. Though the film was not able to do well at the box office but was internationally acclaimed.

Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro


The film was a dark satire on the rampant corruption in Indian politics and was ranked among the top 25 must see Bollywood films.

Sadgati

The film was a vicious indictment of the Indian caste system with Om Puri in the lead role, playing the character of a village shoemaker.

Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyoon Aata Hai

Again, Om Puri was not in the lead role, but his character was powerful and was not just a blink-and-miss appearance.

Gandhi

Om Puri had a very brief but prominent role in the film and his acting was highly praised by the film critics.
