Kattappa is to Baahubali what Bhishma was to Mahabharata. Here's why

Kattappa, one of the most popular characters of Baahubali who killed the protagonist, has many similarities with Bhishma of Mahabharata

The director of Baahubali series, SS Rajamouli revealed a few days ago that his biggest dream was to make Mahabharata for the silver screen on a grand scale. Though Rajamouli is yet to convert this dream of his into reality, seems like he has drawn few references from the epic for Baahubali. Kattappa’s character is one such example where he is to Baahubali what Bhishma Pitama was to Mahabharata.

For over two years now, Kattappa has given sleepless nights to cine buffs because of his betrayal to Amrendra Baahubali. Various theories about the murder of the beloved prince of Mahishmati did rounds on social media after the release of the first installment. One of the sane reasons speculated for Baahubali’s murder was that Kattappa swore his allegiance to the throne and his promise forced him to do the unthinkable.

Kattappa’s loyalty towards the throne of Mahishmati is similar to what Bhishma of Mahabharata is known for. The legend has it that despite being the eldest in the family, Bhishma did little to control the Kauravas as he was bound by a promise he made to Dhritarashtra. The blind King had asked Bhishma to promise that he wouldn’t leave his and his sons’ side no matter what happens. What Bhishma may not have deciphered while agreeing to Dhritarashtra’s demand is that his allegiance to the throne of Hastinapur (the princely state) would spell trouble for everyone in the coming years. It was his silence that started the war and probably his loyalty towards the King that made Pandavas go through what they did.

Baahubali 2: The Conclusion

Just like Bhishma, Kattappa too seems bound by the love and respect for the kingdom. We got a taste of this emotion when he stood by his Queen, Sivagami when many wanted to steal her power. Like a loyal servant to the throne, Kattappa slaughtered every head who posed a threat to the prosperity of Mahishmati.

As the epic Mahabharata has taught us, extreme love towards a position has done little good to anyone. Bhishma’s silence started a domino effect in which the empire of Hastinapur was destroyed and it seems Kattappa’s love led Mahishmati meeting the same fate. Kattappa killing Baahubali spelled trouble as the throne was descended by cruel Bhallala Deva, whose treatment towards his subjects was inhumane, to say the least.

Well, we all will have to wait for 28 April to know the reason behind Kattappa’s betrayal but similarities between him and Bhishma are hard to miss.
