Hindi Medium movie review: Here's why Irrfan Khan, Saba Qamar starrer's funny take on India's school admission woes deserves a watch

Irrfan Khan and Saba Qamar try hard to get their daughter a seat in Delhi's reputed English medium school. Here's our review of the film

Irrfan Khan has a charm of his own. The actor leaves no stone unturned to surprise us with his performances on the silver screen. Now, he is an Old Delhi parent in Hindi Medium, trying hard to get his daughter find a seat in a private English medium school in Delhi. Ably supported by his on-screen wife Saba Qamar, the 50-year-old actor leaves you ROFL with his one-liners.

Raj (Irrfan) and Meeta (Saba) stay with their daughter Pia (Dishita Sehgal) in Chandni Chowk. The little one has attained the age of schooling and the parents begin to feel the heat of the pressure. Getting an admission in a reputed English medium school is easier said than done. The parents are seen praying to God, attending tuition classes and trying all measures to get their children a seat in the school. Director Saket Chaudhary has done a lot of research as the film aptly portrays the chaos ensuing during the school admission process. He had faced a lot of accusations of his venture being allegedly inspired by Bengali film Ramdhanu, a charge Chaudhary has repeatedly denied. Enters labourer Shyam Prakash (Deepak Dobriyal) who is witty and leaves everyone in splits with punchlines like,”hum shuddh gareeb hain.” You must have seen him in Tanu Weds Manu and its sequel Tanu Weds Manu Returns as R Madhavan’s friend Pappiji.

Deepak Dobriyal, Irrfan Khan

Deepak Dobriyal and Irrfan Khan in a still from Hindi Medium

Irrfan Khan is too versatile. You offer him any role and he will essay the role to his full potential. His chemistry with Saba Qamar is quite spontaneous. On the other, Saba should deserve a special applause for her efforts as she gets the typical Old Delhi accent perfect. There are moments in the film wherein you can relate to your real-life experiences during admission. If you are not a parent, you must have seen your mom-dads go through a similar situation as Raj and Mita. Deepak Dobriyal is at his best, lightening the mood at regular intervals.

If you are in dire need of being entertained and educated, this film should be on your to-do list this weekend.
