Baywatch vs Wonder Woman: Priyanka Chopra's Hollywood debut trumps Gal Gadot's Diana at Box Office in India

Priyanka Chopra's Hollywood debut Baywatch might be bad but it still beat Gal Gadot starrer Wonder Woman at the Box Office in India.

Priyanka Chopra’s Hollywood debut did not sit well with critics (or fans) but the Seth Gordon film is certainly doing well for itself now that it has beaten the Wonder Woman. Baywatch defeated Gal Gadot-starrer Wonder Woman at the Box Office in India which is a brilliant feat in itself. Over the weekend, Baywatch collected a gross box office figure of Rs 10.1 crore against Wonder Woman’s 7.40 crore collection.

Directed by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman has been widely appraised by critics globally with a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film has done pretty well internationally and debuted at the Box Office with a whopping $100.5 million, the biggest opening for a female directed movie. However, the DC film doesn’t seem to have much of an audience in India. Neither would Baywatch had it not been for Priyanka Chopra. Baywatch was torn down by critics in early reviews for being too shallow and lifeless and could only rake in a 20% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Internationally, Baywatch pretty much fell flat, despite the presence of big Hollywood stars such as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Zac Efron, but it was received with mixed responses in India. Several critics bashed the movie but, lauded Priyanka for her noteworthy performance as the antagonist Victoria Leeds in the movie.

The Real Reason

While Baywatch might have Priyanka Chopra on its side, its victory over Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman is nothing short of a miracle. The reason behind this anomaly is that while Baywatch was released in 948 screens on Friday, Wonder Woman had to make-do with 350 screens. Not very surprising, really. Priyanka has her fans and Wonder Woman has hers. There’s no doubt India loves to watch Priyanka in whatever thing she features. But to dilute Wonder Woman’s reach across a likely audience was a little unfair. Would they have done the same had it been an Avengers movie? We doubt.
