Now, while commuting in any of cab aggregator Uber taxis via Uber’s mobile application, commuters will also have an access to Delhi police’s women safety mobile application ‘Himmat’. The app was launched by Delhi police in January 2015 so that women can alert the police in case of any emergency.
According to police, till now as many as 90,000 people have downloaded the Himmat application and right now has over 31,000 registered users. Sanjay Baniwal, Special Commissioner Police, Women Safety said that the Delhi Police is committed to providing safety to women and the app provides quick help to those in distress.
He said, “Through this partnership with Uber, we believe more women riders in Delhi will be sensitised about the availability of this assistance at hand. In addition to the emergency button in the Uber app, riders will now have one more touch point to access the police helpline in case of an emergency”.
In the first phase, the Uber will provide a permanent in-app access for Himmat app and there will also be a link to download it from the app store. In the second phase, the users will be able to directly access the Himmat app from within the Uber app.

In a statement on Friday, Uber said, “Through this initiative, Uber joins hands with the law enforcement agency to add one more layer of safety for women riders using Uber”.
Head of public policy, Uber India and South Asia Shweta Rajpal Kohli said that the initiative will help in overcoming safety challenges which are important to make mega-cities like Delhi safe for women.
