Baby boy born ‘pregnant’ with his own twin brother

After the birth of a healthy boy, doctors discovered that there was a half-formed male baby behind his stomach

In a rare medical case, a baby boy was born ‘pregnant’ with his own twin brother at Bilal Hospital in Mumbra. After the birth of a healthy boy, doctors discovered that there was a half-formed male baby behind his stomach. The half-formed male baby was complete with a brain, arm, and legs.

Suspecting it to be a case of rare ‘foetus in fetu’ twin pregnancy, doctors successfully operated on the newborn to remove the 7cm mass. They are claiming such a pregnancy to be one of around 200 cases ever recorded in the world. The baby and his 19-year-old mother from Mumbra are both healthy.

Radiologist Dr Bhavna Thorat, who noticed the abnormality during a routine scan early in July, said: ‘It was inside a fetal sac of the newborn. I could see a tiny head with the brain inside.”

Nine days after the scan, the baby was born on July 20 and when scanned, it was found that there was ‘another small baby’ inside the newborn’s abdomen. “I could see bones of the upper and lower limbs of the fetus. The unique thing about it was I could see a tiny head with the brain inside. However, this parasitic twin didn’t have a skull bone,” Dr Thorat said. Shortly after he was born, he was taken to Titan Hospital in Thane for surgery to remove the 150g mass.

Talking about such cases, gynecologist Dr Neena Nichlani said that cases can also lead to death as both foetus get nutrition from a single cord. “It is a case of monozygotic twin pregnancy sharing a single placenta, where one fetus wraps itself around and envelops the other and robs the host of its nutrition. It can be implanted in skull, abdomen or tail bone of the host.”

Other tests have also been conducted on the baby, the reports of which are awaited.
