Watch: Stranger beats student in Turkey for wearing shorts during Ramzan

A woman in Turkey was beaten up on a bus by a stranger as she was wearing shorts in the holy month of Ramzan. The incident took place on June 14 in a broad daylight and the entire episode was captured on the CCTV footage, the video of which has gone viral.

Asena Melisa Saglam, University student was travelling on a bus in Istanbul when a man who was sitting behind her got up and slapped her. As per a report in AFP, Salgam revealed that the man was verbally harassing her for wearing shorts during Ramzan.

The footage shows, a man suddenly getting up from his seat and punching the women on the side of her face. Salgem who then chases the man and hits him, however, he again grabs her and pushes her before getting out of the bus.

A 21-year-old was quoted by the HurrDaily as saying, “From the moment, I sat down he was making these remarks ‘you dress like this during Ramadan? You should feel ashamed to be dressed like that’.”

After the incident came to light, the man was detained who reportedly told the police that he had been ‘provoked’, as he considered wearing shorts in the month of Ramadan an insult. He was set free after the interrogation, which has created an uproar among the women rights activists across Turkey.

The women’s rights organisation, We Will Stop Femicide Platform took to Twitter and wrote, “The release of the attacker is a threat to all women”. “We will wear whatever we want outside. We will not give up our freedoms.”
