History in making! Indian origin Leo Varadkar might be the next Prime Minister of Ireland

If all goes well, the Indian-origin doctor might soon script a history by becoming the Prime Minster of Ireland. 38-year-old Leo Varadkar, if elected will join the list of the youngest prime ministers in the world. His family is eagerly waiting for the results of the elections which are expected to come out at 10 pm (IST) on June 2.

Leo’s cousin and renowned Odissi dancer Shubhada Varadkar said, “We hail from a family of freedom fighters that spread its wings across Mumbai and Ireland in the 1960s. His father Ashok, a doctor, married an Irish nurse, Miriam. Leo, too, is a medical doctor. His parents visit Mumbai and our ancestral village of Varad. Leo comes too. In fact, he did his internship at KEM hospital. When he was sports minister, he accompanied the Irish cricket team to Mumbai.”

If he comes to power, Leo is planning to suggest some amendments in the strict abortion laws that are prevalent in Ireland. These laws are so stringent in the country that the permission for it is denied in the cases of rape or even if mother’s health is in danger.

Leo Varadkar in an interview said, “I’m not counting my chickens. I’m really humbled at the level of support I have received from my colleagues and I am really looking forward to the hustings and the debates.”

It was in the year 2015 when Leo Varadkar came out as gay and if elected to the top post, Ireland will be the fourth country to have an openly gay head of government. The other three are Belgium’s Elio Di Rupo, Iceland’s Johanna Siguroardottir and Luxembourg’s Xavier Bettel.
