Another attack in London! Van mows down worshippers near mosque, many injured [Watch videos]

The London attack took place near the mosque on Seven Sisters Road which was once a notorious hub for radical Islamists

In yet another attack in London, a vehicle mowed down pedestrians outside a mosque leaving several people injured. The incident took place in North London when worshippers were leaving a mosque. There have been “a number of casualties” in the incident, the police said adding that they were called to reports of “a vehicle in collision with pedestrians” at 00:20 am (23:20 GMT) on Sunday. One person has been arrested in connection with the incident.

“We have been informed that a van has run over worshippers as they left #FinsburyPark Mosque. Our prayers are with the victims,” the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB), an umbrella body, said on Twitter. The head of the MCB, Harun Khan, said that the van had “intentionally” mowed down people who were leaving after the prayers for the holy month of Ramzan.

A helicopter and several emergency vehicles were deployed at the scene and the area has been put under heavy police cordon. The traffic around the section of Seven Sisters Road, where the incident happened, has also been shut. The London Ambulance Service had also sent “a number of resources” to the scene.

The mosque where the incident took place, is located near Seven Sisters Road and was once a notorious hub for radical Islamists. Though reports say that it has entirely changed under new management. Its former imam Abu Hamza, who preached there from 1997 to 2003, was jailed for life in New York on terrorism charges in 2015. He was later extradited to the United States.

Though there has been a change in leadership and there is now a focus on community relations, the mosque has been at the receiving end of threatening emails and letters in the wake of the Paris attacks.

In 2015, the mosque was one of around 20 that took part in an open day organised by the MCB to promote a better understanding of Islam following Islamist-inspired attacks in Paris.
