Mithila Palkar’s TEDx Talks is a delightful reminder that it’s ‘okay to not have a plan’ – Watch

Actress Mithila Palkar delivers her powerful TEDx Talk at NIT Silchar and highlights the importance of 'not having a plan'.

“It is Okay not to have a plan,” says actress Mithila Palker, in front of a packed audience during her first TEDx Talk at NIT Silchar. Her voice rises and falls in tandem as she describes her adventurous journey of becoming a known name in the web circuit and even Bollywood. Mithila rose to fame with her bubbly girl-next-door image in her web series and her viral Marathi song where she is singing and simultaneously making music with cups.

Mithila starts her talk with the delightful Marathi song resulting in a loud applause from the audience. She then gives an example of her friend who accidentally ventured into the film industry and realised his dreams of acting much later. She concludes by raising an important point,

“Life happens to you when you are busy planning other things”

Coming from a middle-class Marathi family, Mithila described her initial struggles with acting. She says she had no ‘role model’ to look up to and had nervously accepted her gut to start acting. Describing her family initial reaction, she says:

“But this is the same family that conditioned me to believe that mantra to live a successful ‘ideal’ life is you grow up, you graduate and you find a ‘decent’ job”

She sheds light on her first epiphany of making an acting career when she was organising an event with a theatre company during college, she says:

“When I witnessed actors perform on stage, I realised that that’s where I want to be. I realised I wanted to be a storyteller. I wanted to be the story”

But not everything comes easy. Mithila says she has had her share of failures and was rejected several times during auditions, but she learnt something greater from those rejections:

“Let me tell you not a lot of those auditions actually translated into offers but they turned out to be a fantastic learning experience for me. It was not just for my skills, it was because also learnt to build resilience”

Speaking of failure and how easy it is to give up, she says:

“Failure makes it very easy to give up and if failure strikes multiple times it becomes even easier”

But, success comes to those who see light at the end of the tunnel.

“You will have to find an alternative, you will have to hussle, nothing is going to come easy”
