For Earth Day 2017, NASA will allow you to chose and ‘adopt’ land across the planet

Glaciers are melting, the level of sea-water is rising, corals are dying and global warming is turning our Earth into a hot oven. In order to raise awareness about the deteriorating health of our planet, American space agency NASA is putting the planet up for adoption ahead of the Earth Day 2017.

The space organisation is inviting people across the globe to virtually ‘adopt’ a piece of our planet as seen from the space. There are 64,000 pieces of land averaging about 55 miles up for adoption, which will be redistributed once all the pieces are adopted.

Users will be allocated locations randomly. So whether you get your hometown or a piece in the Pacific Ocean, it really doesn’t matter. However, the interesting part of this crusade is that once you have adopted a piece of the Earth, you will receive a personalized adoption certificate from NASA highlighting the data collected by the organisation for that location (which means that you not only brag about owning a piece of Earth but also about getting a special certificate from NASA before your friends).

On the flipside, you won’t have any legal rights to the area you adopt (but isn’t it cool anyway?!).
