Samsung just got approval to test its driverless cars in South Korea

Better late than never!

No points to guess who made a late entry into the world of driverless cars? Well, it’s Samsung. The South Korean giant has received an approval by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to test its driverless cars on public roads in South Korea.

According to a report by the Korea Herald,  the company will focus on developing technologies, like sensors and camera, around the car rather than working on the entire vehicle. The report further stated that the company would develop specialised sensors and computer modules that are backed by artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning technologies to improve the capabilities of the autonomous vehicles even in the challenging weather conditions.

As of now, Samsung has not given out details about the project. But the word is that the tech giant would use cars made by the South Korean automaker Hyundai to test its technologies.

Little is known about Samsung’s ambitions of venturing into the autonomous vehicle market. The company first expressed its interest in 2015, when it announced that it was creating a team to work on driverless car technology. Last year in November, the company spent nearly $8 billion to buy US-based company Harman, that develops software and hardware components for cars.

Samsung is the first company to earn a approval in the nation.
