Rejected? 7 probable reasons you didn’t get the job

Your resume was spotless and your interview went well. Yet, you didn't get in your dream company. Here are some things that might have gone wrong

Your resume was spotless. You went through several rounds of interviews. You met your potential bosses and familiarised yourself with the place during the process, but you didn’t get the job. Job rejections can often come as a shock, especially when you believe that your interview went well.

While you think you may have answered all the questions correctly, most hiring managers don’t give out if you are being rejected during the interview (unless of course, you commit a blunder that cannot be ignored). Getting the attire right and arriving at the venue are all important, yet sometimes things don’t work out in our favour. A number of things can go wrong and not all of them are within our reach. So here are some reasons why you didn’t get your dream job:

1) They hired someone from within the company
Hiring for a senior position in a company can be tricky. Hiring an outsider is risky. On the other hand, promoting a competent employee to a better position is less risky as the employee is already familiar with the way the company works.

2) Your references didn’t support you
It is important to have strong recommendations supporting your resume. You can land up in a lot of trouble, even if one of the references doesn’t support you.

3) You used too many jargons
While it’s good to show your hiring manager that you are well versed with the technicalities of your job, it is important that you don’t go overboard with the jargons. Using too many technical terms can leave a negative impression on your hiring manager.

4) You are way above their salary range
All said and done, salary is one of the most important parts of job negotiations. While you might have aced every step, if you are above their target salary range, you can get rejected.

5) You didn’t follow up
Following up is important. It shows that you are serious about the opportunity. While most employers might not appreciate a call during the work hours, a thank you email is perfectly acceptable.

6) Shared too much
Being articulate is the key to a successful interview. Sometimes over-sharing can do more damage than good. Point being– don’t share sad details about your personal life during an interview.
