Tata Motors unveils India’s first biomethane bus. Here are the details

Tata Motors displayed three engines in the event. However, the company has not announced the price of the new bio-methane (or bio-CNG) bus

Ever wondered that a kitchen waste too can be put to good use and that a waste can also help in running a bus. Yes, Tata Motors recently launched India’s first bio-methane bus, bio methane is produced with the help of bio-degradable materials such as kitchen waste. The bus was unveiled recently at a bio-energy programme, ‘Urja Utsav’.

The event took place in Pune’s Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex, where Tata displayed three engines, along with the lead model — Tata LPO 1613 with 5.7 SGI NA BS-IV IOBD-II compliant bus. The company, however, has not announced the price of the new bio-methane (or bio-CNG) bus.

Urja Utsav which was organised by the oil ministry was attended by Minister of State (Independent) for Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan and MoS (Independent) for Power, Coal, New and Renewable Energy and Mines Piyush Goyal.

As per a report in the Indian Express, Head of Commercial Vehicles Business in Tata Motors, Girish Wagh, said in a statement, “The use of Bio-CNG will contribute in a positive manner to the Smart Cities proposition of keeping them clean and is a good option for wet garbage management”.

This is not the first time when Tata Motors have come up with technologies in the CNG engines, earlier they had introduced sequential gas injection technology, skip fire, plug type coils as well as few others.

Rajendra Petkar, Head of Power System, Engineering said: “The showcase of the Bio-Methane bus is a step towards developing environment-friendly vehicles. Biomethane escapes into the atmosphere unused. If trapped and used in engines, it reduces the net impact on the environment
