Tamil Nadu: 2 dead, over 80 injured as hundreds participate in Jallikattu

This came just a day after the Tamil Nadu Governor approved the ordinance seeking permission to hold Jallikattu. Meanwhile, protests continue in TN.

Two people who were taking part in the controversial bull-taming sport, Jallikattu were killed and over 80 were left injured in one of the events held in the state of Tamil Nadu on January 22.

This comes just a day after Tamil Nadu Governer C. Vidyasagar Rao approved the ordinance seeking conduct of the sport. Jallikattu was organized in Pudupatti village in Manaparai’s, and several other parts of Tamil Nadu with over 100 bulls and more than 500 bull tamers participating in the event.

Earlier today, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, O. Panneerselvam faced protests when he went to inaugurate Jallikattu event in Alanganallur. Protesters there, demanded a permanent solution for organising a Jallikattu event in the state, therefore, not allowing Tamil Nadu CM to inaugurate.

While villagers staged a sit-in protest demanding a permanent solution for Jallikattu issue and not a temporary six month permission, CM assured that the ban on Jallikaatu will be lifted.

Earlier, the Supreme Court was informed that both the Centre and Tamil Nadu were in touch and some measures were being taken to tackle the situation that surfaced in light of the harvest festival in which the ancient animal sport has special significance. It has been a week since thousands of people have gathered at the Marina beach in Chennai demanding lift on Supreme Court’s ban on the famous bull taming sport claiming is a part of their culture.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said, “We are very proud of the rich culture of Tamil Nadu. All efforts are being made to fulfill the cultural aspirations of Tamil people.”
