Poverty ridden couple allegedly sell their newborn for Rs 12,000 in Odisha

Due to acute poverty, a couple was forced to sell off their newborn for Rs 12,000 as they could not pay the bill of a private hospital at Kendrapara in Odisha. The incident took place when the couple had gone to the hospital for the delivery of their third child.

34-year-old Nirankar Moharana along with his wife Gitarani Moharana (30) went to the district hospital but the doctors, as well as the ASHA worker Anapurna Moharana, suggested them to go to a private hospital as there were some complications in the pregnancy. On Thursday, Gitarani gave birth to a girl at a private hospital.

After delivery, the couple which hails from Righagada village under Rajnagar block of the district was asked to pay Rs 7,500. Unable to pay this much amount, the couple told the hospital that they won’t be able to arrange the amount. Instead, they agreed to sell their newborn child to a childless couple for Rs 12, 000.

When the couple told about the incident the villagers, they were advised to file a complaint with the police. After which Nirankar and Gitarani registered a FIR against the nursing home and the couple who purchased the newborn child at Kendrapara Town police station on Friday.

Kendrapara SP Dayanidhi Gochayat said, “After the FIR was filed, we have registered a case under Section 372 (sale of a minor child for an unlawful and immoral purpose) and 81, Juvenile Justice Act. Further investigation is going on”.

ASHA worker Anapurna said, “The couple has two daughters. After the birth of their third daughter, they decided to abandon the child in the nursing home. But I resisted it. Later, a childless couple took the newborn by paying some money”.
