Meet the Indian origin doctor who is the youngest to start work in UK

Until the age of 13, Arpan studied at a local school in Gandhinagar in Gujarat but then moved with his father to France

Indian-origin Arpan Doshi will soon become the youngest physician to start working in the United Kingdom. At the age of 21 and 335 days, Arpan completed his graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree from the University of Sheffield on Monday. He will start working at a hospital in north-east England from next month and dreams to become a heart surgeon. He has surpassed the earlier record of the youngest doctor by just 17 days.

In his initial years, Arpan went to a local school in Gandhinagar in Gujarat. When he was 13 years old, his father Bharat who is a mechanical engineer father got a job in Aix en Provence as part of an international Fusion project and the family moved to France.

Arpan continued his education at an International School. He realised that he already knew a lot of what was being taught so he skipped a year.

Just after his 17th birthday, he started applying to universities. While one university rejected his application, three others offered him a place. In fact, he even got a scholarship worth 13,000 pounds from the University of Sheffield due to his credentials.

Fluent in English, Hindi, and Gujarati, Arpan took up part-time jobs as a lunch supervisor at a local school and in the careers service to fund his degree.

Arpan had no idea that he would be the youngest doctor until his friend checked on the internet. “I haven’t even told my parents yet but I know they will be very proud,” he has been quoted as saying.

The doctor who held the record for being the youngest practitioner was Rachael Faye Hill, who got her medical degree from Manchester University in 2010 when she was 21 and 352 days.
