Lakhs Of Kerala Students Now Say They Don’t Belong To Any Caste, Religion. Is This A Movement?

The southern state of Kerala has been witnessing a consistent trend wherein schools students do not identify themselves as part of any religion or caste. Every year, more and more students, from private and government schools, are choosing to leave the religion and caste columns on admission forms empty.

As per a recent declaration by the state government, nearly 1.24 lakh students say that they don’t belong to any religion or caste.

According to an Indian Express report, the statistics were revealed by Education Minister C Raveendranath during a session of the state assembly on Wednesday. Raveendranath, while responding to a query by CPM MLA from Vamanapuram, DK Murali, announced that 1,23,630 students (classes 1-10) did not state that they belonged to any caste or religion. Additionally, 278 class 11 students and 239 class 12 students also followed the trend.

The data has been collected over the academic year 2017-18 from over 9,000 schools across the state, with no district-wise classification of the figures.
