Bengaluru metro green line all set to begin operations! Here’s all you need to know

As many as 24 stations will be part of the green line and the entire distance would be covered in 45 minutes including stoppage

Ending the wait, the green line of Bengaluru’s Namma Metro will soon be open for public. The new line which will start functioning from June 18 will connect Nagasandra in the north to Yelachenahalli in the south. As many as 24 stations will be part of the green line and the entire distance would be covered in 45 minutes including stoppage.

Chickpet, KR Market, National College, Lalbagh, South End Circle, JP Nagar and Yelachenahalli are the metro stations with the parking facilities. The fares for the entire distance from north to south are yet to be finalised. “We will finalise the fares in a few days,” said Bengaluru Metropolitan Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) Managing Director Pradeep Singh Kharola. Currently, the maximum fare on the Purple Line is presently Rs 40.

Kharola added, “About five lakh commuters are expected to use the 43-km Phase-I Metro service on the north-south and east-west corridors daily when fully functional”. Ahead of the opening of the new north-south line of Bengaluru Metro Rail Service, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday took a ride on it.

CM Siddaramaiah was accompanied by Bengaluru Development Minister K.J. George, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T.B. Jayachandra and other Metro officials on half-an -hour trip from Majestic station at the city centre to Yelachenahalli station in the south-west suburb and back.

It was in the year 2014 when the corridor between Sampige Road to Peenya was open to the public and in May 2015 when the stretch from Peenya to Nagasendra became operational. The work for Phase-I project began in April 2007, but due to delays and cost overruns, the deadline got extended from 2010 to 2017.

The green line will connect the remaining ten stations in south. Some of the major stations include KR Market, Lal Bagh, South End Circle and Banashankari, a bus depot in south Bengaluru.
