After Kerala Youth Meets Fatal Accident, His Organs To Save Lives Of Seven Others

Raj sustained grave injuries after a car crashed into the motorbike that he was riding pillion on Sunday

After a tragic road accident rendered him brain-dead, 29-year-old Arun Raj helped save seven other lives. With the help of Kerala Network for Organ Sharing (KNOS), Raj’s family donated five of his organs; the most recorded from one patient, according to the government organ transplantation program.

Raj sustained grave injuries after a car crashed into the motorbike that he was riding pillion on Sunday. He was immediately rushed to the Little Flower Hospital in Angamaly, Kerala, where on Monday, doctors declared him brain-dead and couldn’t help him any further.

“We have a priority list of patients who are in critical condition at several hospitals in the state. When we know about a donor, we immediately get in touch with the concerned hospital and ensure that the transplant takes place as soon as possible,” a KNOS official told The Indian Express.

Raj’s organs helped seven terminally-ill or disabled patients through KNOS, also known as Mrithasanjeevani. According to the report, Raj’s heart was transplanted into a 19-year-old patient at Chennai’s Fortis Malar Hospital. His hands went to a Tamil woman at Amrita Hospital, Kochi, where another patient received his liver. At the same hospital, a patient will soon receive Raj’s pancreas and one kidney, with his other kidney being transplanted into a patient at Kottayam Medical College.

Reportedly, Raj’s eyes were also donated to the hospital’s eye bank and were transplanted in two separate patients. Local councillor Gracy Peter, who was well-acquainted with Raj, told the Indian Express, “Once the doctor said he was brain dead, we convinced his family to donate his organs.”

“His father said that if his son cannot return to life, then other people should live through him,” she added.
