Padmavati row: The deafening silence of A-list Bollywood stars

Someone, please let Bollywood stars know there is a raging controversy about Padmavati

Padmavati has been all over the news for a while now (quite conveniently taking our minds off things which actually matter). The film is in the news for alleged distortion of historical facts (of a Rajput Queen which may or may not existed), the threats issued against Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Deepika Padukone, and the ban on the movie in some states. The outcome of the truckload of controversies was that Padmavati was ‘voluntarily’ deferred the release from December 1.

With fringe groups and MPs of the ruling BJP-govt passing atrocious statements against the film and everyone involved with it, there seems to be no end to the row.  Now, one would expect members of the film fraternity to speak up for a movie when their artistic rights are challenged.

We thought it would be best to look how A-listers in Bollywood have been up to since the controversy began:

Amitabh Bachchan:

Big B had the safest reaction to it all- no response at all. His Twitter timeline is, as always, was full of his pictures. Have a look about the ‘raging’ issues Big B spoke about in the recent days:

hahahahaha ..अरे यार हम तो तुम्हें पिंजरे से बाहर निकालने के लिए मदत कर रहे थे , तुम तो अजीब हो ।। जाओ बंद रहो अंदर !!! https://t.co/L10QWxVRDK

With Big B paying attention to other pressing matters, AAP leader and former journalist Ashutosh thought of trying to turn the megastar’s attention to Padmavati. He tweeted:

@SrBachchan silence on Padmavat is disturbing.

He’s still waiting for a response and so are we.

Shah Rukh Khan:

King Khan, who starred opposite Deepika Padukone in her first film Om Shanti Om, is spending busy days. Most of his time his consumed by attending events. He was seen in at the ongoing film festival in Goa- IFFI and at a concert named Lalkaar organised by Farhan Akhtar’s Men against rape and discrimination (M.A.R.D.) and Feroz Abbas. At the film festival, SRK spoke about cinema’s role in conversation in society, and that is about it.

Here’s how he’s been tackling the controversy:

Aamir Khan:

Now that Secret Superstar has released, Aamir has gone back into his ‘creative’ shell. The last activity on his Twitter timeline dates back to November 2, when he wished Shah Rukh Khan best on his birthday.

Karan Johar:

At a time when Padmavati’s release is shrouded in debates, Karan Johar announced not one but two movies without even a word of support for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film. Within a span of one week, he announced Dhadak and Student Of The Year 2, of course, because there weren’t more important issues.

Vidya Balan:

During promotions of Tumhari Sulu, Vidya Balan was asked to comment on Padmavati, and her reply, well, it was not even close to what one would expect from her. She said:

Because I am in the middle of ‘Tumhari Sulu’ promotions, I have not kept myself updated about the controversy regarding ‘Padmavati’. So, I don’t want to make any loose comment about anything, especially being the member of the CBFC.

One would think being a member of CBFC she would be a little more updated about issues pertaining to films. Well, it seems Bollywood A-listers have more pressing matters to talk about than address the fact that their very creative license is under threat.
