Over 2 years after husband’s death, woman gives birth to their daughter

Speaking at his funeral, Chen had said that even though Liu left them early, he was still with them

In December 2014, Pei Xia Chen’s husband Wenjian Liu was killed while he was on duty serving as a New York City police officer. He along with his partner Rafael Ramos were killed in their patrol car. Over two and a half years later, Chen on Tuesday gave birth to their daughter Angelina at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

Speaking at his funeral, Chen had said that even though Liu left them early, he was still with them.

When the 32-year-old was ambushed and killed, Chen had asked the hospital that his semen be preserved. She had hoped that some day she would be able to give birth to their daughter.

Elated at the news, Chen says that she knew she would have a daughter. “I told my friend, ‘It’s going to be a baby girl,’ but my friend said, ‘No, you haven’t even checked the sonograms,’ but I was right!”

Liu was believed to be the first Asian American police officer who was killed in the line of duty. It was soon after their marriage that Liu was fatally shot at in Bedford-Stuyvesant by gunman Ismaaiyl Brinsley.

Liu, who was fondly called by many as Joe, had come to the United States from China when he was 12 years old along with his parents.

When the parents got to know about the birth of their son’s daughter, they got extremely emotional. Chen had not told them earlier about her efforts of artificial insemination until she was pregnant. It is reported that she did not want to break her family’s hearts if it wasn’t successful. But on Tuesday, the parents cried while holding the baby. “I see my son in her,” Liu’s mother said.

Liu’s mother also plans to take the little girl Angelina to her father’s grave when she is month old. “This way I can tell him he has a daughter,” she said.
