Pakistani media quoted Sartaj Aziz saying India cannot unilaterally withdraw from the Indus Water Treaty which provides most of the required water in Pakistan.
Nawaz Sharif’s advisor Sartaj Aziz was quoted by the media saying that the Indus Water Treaty was not suspended even during the Kargil and the Siachen wars. The senior advisor also said that Pakistan may approach the International Court of Justice if India violates the treaty.
The debate over the Indus water treaty escalated after the Uri attack in which 18 Indian soldiers were killed. In the wake of the Uri attack, India allegedly started multi-pronged strategy to isolate Pakistan.
Earlier on Monday, Indian Prime Minster Narendra Modi hold a high-level review meeting on the Indus Water Treaty. The meeting was said to discuss better use of the water treaty.
Diplomatic tensions among the neighbouring countries grew after the Uri attack and BJP activists had demonstrated against Pakistan demanding a strong and multi-pronged action against Pakistan from the Modi government.
The Uri attack put forth the conflicting views of the India and Pakistan on Kashmir. Earlier Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif told Burhan Wani a martyr in his United Nations General Assembly speech. Taking on Sharif, BJP national spokesperson Ram Madhav termed the Sharif’s speech as a pathetic one.
