Donald Trump formally wins US presidency

In what could be termed as the most unanticipated victory, Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton despite her winning the popular votes, last month.

More than a month after the world woke up to the news of Donald Trump winning the Presidential elections, the Electoral College on Monday formally announced that the US President-elect Donald Trump had won more than 270 Electoral college votes to formally become the 45th President of the United States.

In what could be termed as the most unanticipated victory, Donald Trump defeated his Democrat opponent Hillary Clinton despite her winning the popular votes.

Trump is now all set to take charge from 20 January.

Naturally, Trump is ecstatic about his formal win as he took to Twitter to thank his supported while hitting out at the media for being “inaccurate”.

Trump registered wins in Florida, Texas, Ohio, Georgia, Tennessee, and Indiana which are massive states in terms of electoral votes. The Republican candidate’s gain in these states proved to be decisive. Among the big states, Hillary Clinton won New York and California, but that was not enough for the Democrat candidate to reach the magic number of 270. In the United States, a candidate that wins 270 votes out of the electoral college’s strength of 538 becomes the President of the country.

The opinion polls had predicted Hillary to win the elections. Her popularity among minorities and young voters also contributed to poll pundits siding with her. The New York senator received a shot in the arm after the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) gave her a clean chit in the email controversy.

Trump managed to win the most volatile and coveted election despite being embroiled in the locker room controversy. He had faced a severe backlash over the alleged sexist remarks he had made in a tape dated to 2005.
