Khichdi might be named ‘National Food’ of India, Twitter wants biryani instead

"Queen of all foods" Khichdi will earn the title at India's largest global food show, World Food India, most likely on November 4.

Khichdi, our forever go-to comfort food, is all set to become the National Food of India. The Indian dish, which is a simple mixture of rice and daal, will earn the title at India’s largest global food show, World Food India, most likely on November 4. The event will be organised by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries through November 3-5, 2017 in New Delhi.

As per a TOI report, Union Cabinet Minister of Food Processing Harsmirat Kaur Badal stated that the ministry named the dish as a representative of Indian cuisine as it is relished by people from all economic backgrounds across the country. Badal also stated that the ministry now aims to market khichdi and introduce it to the rest of the world. The Union Minister posted a tweet on Tuesday, inviting people to come to the event, which will be inaugurated by Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu.

I encourage everyone to head over to the @WorldFoodIndia mega event this weekend for a truly breathtaking experience. #WorldFoodIndia pic.twitter.com/loHiunz6HU

Apart from the grand revelation of India’s National Food, the event will also have some of the best chefs from the country coming together to prepare 800 kgs of khichdi, aiming for a Guinness World Record.

However, even though khichdi holds a special place in our hearts, having nursed us back to health every time we fell sick, people were not rejoiced by the news. Here is how people on Twitter reacted:

Dafaq, Govt? Khichdi? Seriously?
It must be BIRYANIIIIII! #OUTRAGE pic.twitter.com/bosI8O8aFS

Then there were others who were just not fine with khichdi either way.

Why Khichdi? I would want Aloo Methi to finally get its due.

Really khichdi ? Why not paw bhaji or gol gappe or rajma chawal or chole bhature or idli sambhar . Khichdi is patients bland food 🙁
