The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is all set to launch its heaviest satellite– GSAT 19 from the second launch pad (SLP) at Satish Dhawan Space Research Center at Sriharikota today. GSAT 19 weighs 3,136 kg will be carried by the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark- III (GSLV MK III) rocket. The rocket will carry the satellite to an altitude of 179 Km above the Earth in the Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO).
The countdown for the launch began at 3:58 pm on Sunday and was progressing smoothly according to the ISRO officials. GSLV MK III is a three-stage rocket that is capable of placing 4 tonnes class satellites of GSAT series into the GTO. It can also place a payload of up to 8,000 Kg into the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) at an altitude of 600 Km.
GSAT 19 is powered by an indigenously developed Lithium-ion battery and has a shelf-life of 10 years.
