Sunny Leone to Anushka Sharma: Can journalists please ask female celebs better questions?

Women are much more than their height, weight, facial features and their personal lives. Is it  too difficult to just focus on their achievements?

Women achievers and celebrities, in the field of sports or entertainment have to deal with sexism, be it about their personal lives or their work. While a male sportsperson or an actor is rarely asked questions about family planning or questions other than their work, female players and actors are invariably asked questions, which have no relation to their work whatsoever. But time and again, these strong-headed women have shut down sexism and nonchalantly put people, asking these ‘inappropriate’ questions, in their place.

In order to grab eyeballs and make juicy headlines, journalists often tend to ask female celebrities ‘controversial’ (read irrelevant, obnoxious and nosy) questions.

A lot of these times, these journalists have been brutally and appropriately shut down by celebrities with witty, sarcastic and befitting responses. Have a look at this list of 12 such celebrities:

1.  Anushka Sharma

During the promotions of NH10, Anushka a reporter continuously pestered Anushka with questions related to cricket.

Reporter: “…you’ve often been spotted in stadiums watching cricket and because you’re a celebrity, people want to know…”
This is how Anushka responded:

2. Parineeti Chopra

During the promotions of her movie Shuddh Desi Romance, a reporter figured idiocy is the way to fame.

Reporter: “When girls are young, they like it (sex), when they grow older, they scream about it.”
Parineeti got visibly irritated but made sure she responded to his ridiculous question.

3. Alia Bhatt

When Alia had to ask a reporter to shut his sh*t down.

Reporter: “We have heard that Shahid Kapoor (her Shandaar co-star) had sent flowers for you, when you were unwell.”
Alia had this to say:

4. Priyanka Chopra

When you want to troll Priyanka Chopra but she’s better at it than you are.

Reporter: “Don’t you think if you had co-hosted this award show with Shah Rukh Khan, it would have been more romantic and entertaining?”
Pee Cee had the perfect response ready with her.

5. Deepika Padukone

Actually, it was Ranbir Kapoor who spoke up for his Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani co-star.

Reporter: “People are doing anything for promotions, will we again see some tattoos for the promotion of this movie (Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani)?
Ranbir Kapoor took over the reigns to answer on her behalf and you cannot miss this:

6. Kangana Ranaut

This would definitely go in the records for being the ‘most irrelevant and bizarre’ question ever.
Reporter: “Ranbir Kapoor or Virat Kohli may get married next year, on which song will you dance?”
Here’s Kangana’s response:

7. Sania Mirza

When you’re a tennis ace but people want to know when you’ll be popping out babies.
Rajdeep: “When is Sania going to settle down…what about motherhood, building a family…?”
Sania Mirza quickly shut him down with this:

8. Mithali Raj

Captain of the Indian women’s cricket team, Mithali Raj shut down a reporter for asking ‘Who’s her favourite male cricketer’. In response to such a sexist question, Mithali asked the reporter ‘if he would ask the same question to a male cricketer?’ She was lauded for her response on social media by a famous cricket-writer and commentator, Adam Collins.

Superb response from Indian skipper Mithali Raj. Asked by a reporter who her favourite male player is: “Would you ask a man that?” #WWC17 pic.twitter.com/RqgVLzXp46

9. Bipasha Basu

For newly married Bipasha Basu, sexism came in the form of her pregnancy rumours. Because when a woman marries ‘late’, that is why she marries at all.

The curiosity about me being pregnant…is sweet and a tad annoying. I am sorry to disappoint the ppl who are so eager for this to happen.

We are not planning to have a baby right now. When we do plan..it will be joyous news which we will share with our well wishers then.

— Bipasha Basu (@bipsluvurself) March 28, 2017

The constant guessing game is tiring..as am more than straightforward person. So pls do not believe anything that gets written.Thank you all.

10. Vidya Balan

Vidya Balan is known for her strong women-oriented roles and impressive acting skills. In a world and industry obsessed with physical fitness and size-zero, Vidya has been told to reduce her weight. Not just that, during an interview with a leading news channel, Vidya opened up about blatant sexism prevalent in the film industry.

11. Kriti Sanon

During the promotions of Heropanti, Kriti Sanon was hilariously asked the most twisted question ever.

Reporter: “Nowadays, movies have a lot of scenes where youngsters are kissing each other, does your movie have kissing scenes?”
Kriti handled it brilliantly:

12. Sunny Leone

Last but not the least is Sunny Leone. And no one has forgotten her interview with Bhupinder Chaubey.

Bhupinder Chaubey: “It is believed, you see a Sunny Leone film and you’ll get morally corrupted. I’m wondering if I am also getting morally corrupted because I’m interviewing you?”
Sunny Leone was sharp with her response.

It’s time that media understands that these women are much more than their height, weight, facial features and their personal lives. Is it  so hard to just focus on their achievements?
