Dipa Karmakar Makes India Proud Again, Wins Gold Medal In Gymnastic World Challenge Cup

Dipa first rose to fame when she won a bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow

“Dipa Karmakar is the stuff champions are made of,” sports minister Rajyavardhan Rathore said on Twitter to congratulate ace Indian gymnast after she bagged India’s first-ever gold in the women’s vault event at the Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup in Turkey on July 8. This was Karmakar’s first medal in a World Challenge Cup.

24-year-old Karmakar, who returned to action after a gap of two years due to injury, scored 14.150 points to secure the top honour. Dipa topped the qualification round with a score of 13.400.

Tripura girl Karmakar had to sit out for two years after undergoing surgery for Anetrior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury which after the 2016 Rio Olympics.

She first rose to fame when she won a bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow, becoming the first Indian female gymnast to do so in the history of the Games.

Karmakar will now feature in the Indian gymnastics squad at the upcoming Asian Games.
