Just 7.69 Seconds! Shane Long Scores Quickest Goal In Premier League History

We don't see this record getting broken anytime soon

You don’t expect Shane Long to score too often, let alone score the quickest goal in the history of Premier League. Watford was off to a lazy start expecting Southampton forwards to hang back and wait for their chance. But Long went after the ball straightaway and blocked defender Craig Cathacart’s clearance, followed by a dink shot over goalkeeper to score the quickest goal in Premier League history clocking at just 7.69 seconds.

Nothing is a lost cause. You just think it is, so you don’t even bother to try sometimes.

The 32-year-old broke the 18-year-old record of Ledley King who scored the previous quickest goal in just 9.82 seconds for Spurs against Bradford City on December 9, 2000.

But it wasn’t meant to be a perfect game for the Irish footballer as Watford’s Andre Gray netted a late equalizer in the 90th minute.

The quick start was all part of the plan as Long revealed, “The manager said to make a quick start and put them under pressure. It’s a nice record to have.”

Long, surprised that he had broken an all-time Premier League record, said: “Ninety-nine times out of 100 you don’t block them clearances, but I did and took a touch across him. Ben is an amazing keeper, he spreads himself so well so I knew before the game that the dink was a good finish against him – and it came off. Every game we try to force them into a long pass early and show intent from the first ball, I blocked it and it fell nicely.”

Here are a few reactions to the magical goal:

We’re aware that #ShaneLong is on fire and have contacted our colleagues in Southampton fire brigade (@Hants_fire ) to let them know #PL #SaintsFC pic.twitter.com/QhyuW6QhOX

I think I am having the weirdest dream. Not only has Shane Long scored after seven seconds but I just heard John Barnes say ‘shut up Southampton fans’ because they were interrupting him signing Rocket Man by Elton John on the pitch. And now he’s doing World in Motion…#SaintsFC

Shane Long doesn’t score often, but when he does, he finishes after just six seconds.

I can relate to that.
