Manish Pandey played a gem of a knock while anchoring Sunrisers Hyderabad’s (SRH) runchase against Mumbai Indians (MI) yesterday. Pandey spearheaded the runchase with 71 runs off 47 deliveries. With 7 runs needed off the last ball of the innings, he struck a six and took the game to a superover. However, it was his miscalculation on the first ball of superover that may have cost SRH the game.
The SRH batsman got run out on the first ball of the superover. He was in a position where he could have managed to score 15-20 runs from that over, but his wicket on the first ball meant that SRH were under pressure. Mohammad Nabi did hit a six as he came to bat but got out with two balls to go on which SRH could have scored.
Former Australian cricketer Dean Jones had a piece of advice for batsmen batting in high pressure superovers,
Super Overs are never easy. But batsmen must NOT run themselves out on 1st ball of the over! Because the next batsman has no freedom to play the rest of the over. It’s a fine line.. but do not run yourself out! #SelectDugout @StarSportsIndia #MIvSRH

As a result, SRH could only manage to score 8 runs in the superover. Given the nature of the game, it was not much to defend. But skipper Kane Williamson trusted their most economical bowler to do the job. With IPL economy rate of 6.55, Rashid Khan could not defend the score as in-form Hardik Pandya muscled him for a six over a long on.
