Kids From Class 6 Onwards To Now Be Trained In ‘Yogic Activities’, Says NCERT

The initiative is an attempt to ensure that children have a healthy mind and body

Promoting the importance of physical education, sports, and yoga in schools, the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has announced students from class 6 onwards would be trained in ‘yogic activities’.

The course guidelines have been shared with all states and Union Territories for implementation and schools under Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) are more likely to follow them, reported Bengali daily Sangbad Pratidin.

Hindustan Times quoted an NCERT official that the guidelines are not binding on the schools. If the schools were to follow the guidelines, they would have to offer health and physical education as a compulsory subject for classes 1 to 10.

“We want schools to introduce it from class 6 onwards so that they focus on both the theory and practical part. For instance, doing the asanas, pranyam and meditation should be undertaken… replacing this period with other periods they should give physical education its due place,” the NCERT official told Hindustan Times.

The NCERT has mandated that health and physical education needs to be a part of the course as much as yoga. The initiative is an attempt to ensure that children have a healthy mind and body, Sangbad Pratidin reported.
