Buying Your First Saree This Festive Season? Here's A Simple Guide To Saree Shopping

Pick a saree according to your unique personal style.

With Durga Pujo just right the corner, a whole lot of you are probably looking to buy sarees. Finding the perfect saree can become a bit stressful considering the vast options available, like tussar silk, georgette, chiffon and chanderi cotton. Especially if this the first time you’re buying one without help from your mom.

Don’t worry! We’ve got your back.

Here is our practical guide to buying your first saree to achieve that classy and chic look:

1. Choose according to your personality

Inspired by a celebrity or a distant cousin’s style? Great that you have an idea of what styles you like, but remember to choose a saree that goes with not only your personality but also what material you can manage.

If you like turtle faces and bicycles prints on your sarees, go for it. If you feel comfiest in cotton, wear it. If you prefer pastel colours over vibrant shades, embrace it. Your personal style is unique, so flaunt it with pride.

2. Choose a fabric which is easy to manage and maintain

While some may argue that silk sarees work best for festivals, others might find it cumbersome to maintain. Choose fabrics which are lightweight and do not require frequent dry cleaning. Stay away from heavily embroidered sarees with broad borders, as they are not easy to drape.

Choose breathable fabrics. Besides silk, some other good options are–organza, chanderi cotton, crepe, georgette and chiffon.

3. Classic over trendy or vice versa?

Stripes, floral prints and sequined drapes are in trend this season. However, if you are somebody who is confused between choosing a heritage heirloom or a trendy design, we recommend going for the classic one.

Tussar, jamdani, banarasi, kalamkari, khanta, kashmiri, kanchipuram, raw silk and paithani— traditional silk sarees come in a wide range and you can choose according to your taste and culture.

4. Blouses can make all the difference

Team up your traditional saree with an off-shoulder crop-top, or an elegant boat neck with three-quarter sleeves.

A quirky blouse can make a saree stand out. Experiment with the sleeve length, back buttons, and laces. Try not to be too matchy. Brocade and kalamkari blouse can pep up a simple look.
