Depression cases are fast increasing in India, reveals WHO. Here’s how you can deal with it

Over 5 crore people in India are suffering from depression

In a troubling revelation made by the World Health Organisation (WHO), India has been adjudged one of the majorly affected countries from depression. According to the UN health organisation, nearly 50 per cent of the total 322 million people are living with depression across the world—in India alone, there are over 5 crore people suffering from it.

The UN organisation in its latest health report revealed that between 2005 and 2015, the number of people living with depression increased by a whopping 18.4 per cent globally, which is a matter of concern.

The WHO in its report titled ‘Depression and Other Common Mental Disorders — Global Health Estimates’ also stated that depression is more prevalent in women than men. Interestingly, in the south-east region—that also includes India—the depression rate found in women is 5 per cent and 4 per cent in men.
