Woman in Patiala allegedly thrashed by in-laws for giving birth to a girl

The victim alleged that on July 13, she was beaten up by her brother-in-law Kamaljeet Singh and his friends when they got to know about the complaint

Even after taking various steps to put an end on dowry culture and to stop female infanticide, many incidents come to light where women are still tortured for dowry and for giving birth to a girl child. Recently, a woman in Patiala was allegedly beaten up by her in-law for giving birth to a girl and over dowry.

A video of the incident has surfaced on the social media. In the video that was posted by the ANI on twitter, two men can be seen beating a woman with the hockey stick. However, the authenticity of the video could not be verified. Reportedly, the incident took place on Friday. So, far woman’s brother-in-law and his friends have been arrested by the police.

The woman in the video has been identified as Meena Kashyap who has alleged that her in-laws were harassing her after she gave birth to a girl. Her husband’s family refused to accept the girl and were also demanding Rs 7 lakh as dowry. After which she and her husband, Daljeet Singh started living separately.

She also filed an FIR in April this year in Kotwali police station regarding the dowry demanded by in-laws and harassment. The victim alleged that on July 13, she was beaten up by her brother-in-law Kamaljeet Singh and his friends when they got to know about the complaint.

“We had complained about the issue last year itself but nothing was being done regarding that. They have been married for the past two years now and have a girl child. Their family asked Rs. seven lakh for dowry,” victim’s father told ANI.
