When protectors become predators: Minor allegedly raped by police constable in Nashik

Accused Gorakh Shekhre was a constable at Mumbai's Byculla police station, he allegedly raped the minor in Nashik

If those who are supposed to uphold the law become the one to break it, then where would you expect a common man to go. In yet another instance of protectors becoming the predators, a 15-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a police constable on Monday in Dindori Tehsil of Maharashtra’s Nashik district.

Accused Gorakh Shekhre was a constable at Mumbai’s Byculla police station, he allegedly committed the offence in Nashik. He was arrested under section 376 and sections of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO). According to a report in India Today, the accused has a notorious history and has been suspended in the past years also.

The report also says that the relatives of the victim alleged that the police was initially reluctant to lodge an FIR against the cop and girl was asked difficult questions before registering a case. The relatives are also skeptical of a fair investigation. This is not the first case that points out the crime against woman by police itself.

Last week only, a police inspector in UP’s Badaun was booked for allegedly sending obscene messages to a woman and threatening her father. In 2015, three cops from Mumbai’s Sakinaka police station were arrested for raping a 29-year-old model. In April 2005, a Mumbai police constable raped a girl at Marine Drive police station after  threatening to inform her parents about seeing her in a compromising position with her friend.
