‘Virgin means unmarried and pure girl’, Bihar Minister comes up with this bizarre defence

Bihar Health Minister Mangal Pandey said that the institute did nothing wrong in asking its employees to declare their virginity as virgin means 'unmarried' and 'pure'

A day after a marital declaration form of Patna’s Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Science (IGIMS) came to light as per which its employees need to declare if they are a virgin and had some other weird questions. Now, a minister in Bihar government has come with an equally bizarre defence.

Bihar Health Minister Mangal Pandey said that the institute did nothing wrong in asking its employees to declare their virginity as virgin means ‘unmarried’ and ‘pure’. The minister went on to say that, “Virgin, as per the dictionary, means an unmarried and pure girl. So all these words are not objectionable”. He had previously told a news channel that the question about being a virgin was asked the employees to get their zodiac sign for official purposes.

Earlier, he had said that the same form was used by AIIMS hospital too. “It has been a rule for 34 years for medical staff to submit the declaration”. After the uproar on the social media, the minister ordered to replace ‘virgin’ with ‘unmarried’ on the form.

Apart from declaring virginity, the form also asks the male employees to give details, if they have more than one wife. Deputy Medical Superintendent, Dr Manish Manadal said, “Rules are made by the government and constitution. If they change the word, we will too.”
