Lucknow Police has set up 42 Shakti mobile units to crackdown against eve-teasers and harassers

UP police’s infamous anti-Romeo squad has a new name – Shakti. The idea, which has been conceived by Lucknow police, is aimed at curbing crimes against women, a Times of India report says.

According to the report, Lucknow police has set up 42 Shakti mobile units to prevent eve-teasing and harassment in the city. Each Shakti police unit will comprise of five police officials including a top police officer and two female cops. However, for now, Shakti mobile units can be seen on the streets of Lucknow only.

The unit has been tasked to remain outside colleges, cinemas and coaching centres during rush hours. The units have been also briefed dissuade from indulging in moral policing and filming couples sitting in public places.

“The motto is to increase the presence of police among public and simultaneously ensure safety and security of women. At no point will any police personnel detain a youth or ask him to do sit-ups in a public place. They will not indulge in moral policing either,” Lucknow SSP Kalanidhi Naithani told TOI.

Earlier this year, Uttar Pradesh Police decided to integrate women helpline (1090), anti-romeo squad and UP-100 services for effective policing and prevention of crimes against women in the state, a PTI report said.
