Upper caste villagers in Karnataka allegedly poison well to stop Dalits from drinking water

There are seven wells in the village out of which the members of Dalit community are only allowed to use only one well, that too, which is located 200m away from the village's border

Untouchability is still a major issue in India and there are many who have to pay the price of it. In the recent incident that took place in a village in Karnataka, some of the members of an upper caste community allegedly poured endosulfan into a village well so as to stop Dalits from drinking water.

The incident took place in Channur village, which is located 640 km away from Bengaluru and falls under Kalaburgi district. There are seven wells in the village out of which the members of Dalit community are only allowed to use only one well, that too, which is located 200m away from the village’s border.

However, rest of well are in the village and are used by the people of the upper caste. The owner of the farm land near the well, which is used by Dalits, is a member of Dalit community. But after the lease of the land was given on lease to one Gollalappagouda Kallappagouda Kukanur who belongs to the upper caste, the Dalits are not allowed to draw water from the well.

A pumpset has been fixed to the well to draw water which supplies water to the Dalits’ colony. A few days ago, Mahantappa, a Dalit went to the well as there was no supply of water due to the power cut. But he found that the water smelt bad and also informed the other residents to not drink water from the well.

After the complaint, the police has filed a case against Gollappagouda and he has also been booked under section 3 of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
