‘Tight slap to those who disrespect women,’ Twitter reacts to death sentence for Nirbhaya’s rapists

The decision has come after four accused in the case- Akshay Thakur, Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta and Mukesh had challenged the Delhi High Court order

Announcing the verdict on 2012 gang-rape and murder of Nirbhaya which shook the entire nation, the Supreme Court on Friday upheld the death sentence to all the four accused. Terming it as the rarest of the rare case, the apex court while announcing the verdict said, “taking the serious injuries, the severe nature of the offence committed by the convicts, we are upholding the sentence”.

The decision has come after four accused in the case- Akshay Thakur, Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta and Mukesh had challenged the Delhi High Court order which had sentenced them to death. Announcing the verdict, the bench of justices said,”The accused were obsessed about ravishing her life, she was treated as an object of enjoyment”.

Reacting to the verdict, Nirbhaya’s father said: “It’s a victory for my family, I am very happy with the judgement”. Asha Devi, Nirbhaya’s mother said, “Many ups and downs came, I made them my strength. I was confident that justice will be done”.

Union Cabinet Minister for Women and Child Development, Maneka Gandhi said, “I am happy that the verdict has been upheld though I wish it had come sooner”.

Meanwhile, lawyer of the convicts’ AP Singh showing his disappointment to the verdict said, “Justice has not been done. We will file a review petition after reading the order”. Justice Bhanumati said that there should be a systematic education of children to ensure how they will give respect to women.

After the much-awaited announcement, reactions started pouring in on twitter:

Rape has only one Punishment – Death. If you don't bring fear in them of not doing it, they will bring fear in you by doing it.#Nirbhaya
