Three Indians among top five wealthiest in Britain, Hinduja Brothers top the list

The wealthiest people in the United Kingdom people of Indian origin with Hinduja brothers having topped the 2017 list of the richest people in the UK, as per the 29th edition of the 2017 Sunday Times Rich List. The Hinduja Brothers Srichand and Gopichand jumped up the ladder to become the top billionaires of the country with an estimated fortune of 16.2 billion pounds.

Aged 81 and 77, Srichand and Gopichand Hinduja have made benefits out of their investments in industries like oil and gas, automotive, IT, energy, media, banking, property, and healthcare sectors. They have also recently invested in a 350-million-pound project for converting the Old War Office in London into a five-star hotel.

Also in the list are Mumbai-born David and Simon Reuben. They held the top position in 2016 but now hold the third position in 2017 list with a fortune of 14 billion pounds. Indian-born steel giant Lakshmi Mittal made a huge jump by stepping up seven spots to reach the fourth position in this year’s list with fortune worth 13.2 billion pounds.

Apart from these three, over 40 Indian-origin super-rich are included in this year’s list of the UK’s 1,000 wealthiest people. As per ‘The Sunday Times Rich List’, these people have been reaping a so-called “Brexit bonanza”. There have been many uncertainties due to Britain voting to opt out of the European Union (EU) in June 2016.

New billionaires Gujarati migrant brothers Mohsin and Zuber Issa are also among the top 40 Indian-origin super-rich. Their Euro Garages business is rated among Europe’s largest independent fuel retailer. Brothers – Raj, Tony and Harpal Matharu – have also been included in the list after having made 1 billion pounds in 2016 with their Grange hotel chain in the UK.
