At least 2 people have been killed and as many as 81 have been left injured in the controversial bull taming sport Jallikattu held at Sivaganga district of Tamil Nadu. Apparently, the event was held in a “royal” setting just like it used to be conducted in the ancient times.
According to reports, the people who lost their lives during the event were only spectators of the show. Reports suggest that the organisers of the event made efforts to create a setting and an environment that prevalent in the olden times. While one of the was speared to death, other reportedly passed away due to “shock”.
The man has been identified as Thirunavakarau who was an engineering graduate. While a number of people including bull tamers were injured during the course of the event, a scuffle broke out between two groups after the organisers allegedly announced wrong prize winners. Following which, a number of valuables including motorbikes, and prizes were damaged.
“Usually we watch Jallikattu on TV only due to the big crowd and inadequate facility to view the event. But here there was a good opportunity to witness the action as the seating arrangements were good and passes were issued promptly,” the Times of India quoted a spectator as saying.
The police reportedly detained 10 people in connection with the violence caused in the event. This comes months after over 32 people were injured in a Jallikattu event held at Siravayal village. The state of Tamil Nadu saw a major uproar earlier this year after the Supreme Court put a ban on the bull taming sport. However, the residents of the state demanded for the ban to be lifted since it was a traditional sport.
