Supreme Court to hear plea on Rs 500, Rs 1,000 notes next week

The Narendra Modi government scrapped Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes from November 9.

The Supreme Court will hear the plea against the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 next week.

However, the Centre wants to be heard before the apex court passes any order on pleas against demonetisation.

A bench comprising Justice Anil R Dave, Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman and Justice AM Khanwilkar said the plea would be heard on November 15.

On the other hand, government’s counsel R Bala Subramaniam told the apex court that they should be served with the copy of the petition as the union government had filed a caveat in the matter.

A lawyer from Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday moved the Supreme Court against the government’s announcement on demonetisation of the notes, terming it a draconian decision.

Sangam Lal Pandey, the petitioner, in his plea has cited difficulties faced by farmers and other sections of the society. He sought the quashing of decision claiming that private hospitals, medical shops were not accepting the existing Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes. Adding further, Pandey in his PIL claimed that several people had withdrawn large amount of money for the marriage of their sons and daughters but are in a fix as the cash has been declared invalid.

The Narendra Modi government on Tuesday scrapped the Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes, replacing them with Rs 500 and Rs 2000 notes which will be distributed from today. The government cited the move directed as a campaign to curb black money and corruption. The people can exchange their old notes with the new ones at any bank or post office from November 10 to December 30.
